For residential heating, not much beats a gas furnace.  They are relatively quiet, depending on the model and age of the unit.  Gas furnaces are efficient, again relative to the age and model.  Just compare them to the fires heating caves in caveman days.  Gas furnaces require little care, requiring only occasional maintenance to keep them running, unlike the fireplaces of old, which demanded constant attention.  Moreover, they are safe.  The Goodman Gas Furnace is a great example; quiet, efficient, easy to use and maintain, and safe.  Compared to the rest of human history, we have absolutely incredible heating systems available to us today.
