This follows the age-old envelopes method which your parents used to apply on their finances. They would put money inside real envelopes and mark them with a given sign, like “electricity”, or “rent”, etc. So in that way, whenever a bill came, they were ready. The same thing happens when you use budget software, with the only difference being that it’s much more convenient. When the mortgage bill needs to be paid, you will record the check from the “Mortgage” envelope. When you get paid, you will distribute the money to your envelopes to fill them up again.
