In a statement in Monday’s New York Times, Google confirmed that it would launch a partner programme which would allow authors to sell electronic versions of their books on the web. The move puts big G in direct competition with Amazon and the Amazon kindle ebook reader the current market leader for ebook readers. Google is reported to be developing a “digital book ecosystem” which will allow authors, in partnership with Google, to release and promote their books on a wide variety of platforms. After the launch of the kindle 2 in Feb 2009, the ebook market seems to be exploding. It will be interesting to see who else steps up to compete with Amazon and Google.
